I don't know if this is the same thing but a while back I received an email inviting me to "beta test" some new D'Addario acoustic strings. I'd given them my email address some time previously so I felt it was legit.

I got the strings about a week ago and while they are EXP16 strings, they are apparently made with some "NY Steel" from their new string plant. I don't really know one steel from another so I can't say much about the material.

I strung them up and like them very much, but then I've been using the "old" version for about a year and loved them.

I honestly can't tell the difference between the "NY" and the older ones. The only difference in packaging is a silver sticker applied to the package the said something about "New York Steel" or something like that.

Supposedly I'm destined to get the chance to review them but so far, no opportunities.

When they came, didn't they have a sleeve around the packaging with a URL (web address) to leave your feedback? Mine did.

I got mine yesterday. They are 12's so I will pass them along to a friend who uses that gauge. Too bad they didn't have a place to state your preference. What's the point of giving out strings that the requester might not use?

Got mine in the mail today. D'Addario EXP Phosporous Bronze .12-.53 gauge made from NY steel.

I am the OP re:the free strings...I got a nice little package from D'Addario today with a set of acoustic 12's, EXP Coated Phosphor Bronze Strings, for a beta test...so it was totally up and up...thank you D'Addario...I will try them out and let them know what I think...

Have to throw out a smug and childish, "told you so" to those who claimed it was an insidious scam.

Really excited to try these. I hate coated strings and stopped buying them but I've got hope that these will be something good.
