The SDOTD is usually a loss leader, either MF's or their supplier's, and its price probably doesn't represent actual costs.

That is a hell'va deal. I don't think you can really go that wrong for $200.

Just a quick question though,,,,,,do the ABS binding help in wet weather

I know I know that was cheesy

The Alvarez artist series is actually my favorite "budget" line. I have purchased them for music programs and students I have been involved with. I find them a better value than similarly price Yamahas - the fit, finish, and tone are simply the best in the $3-500 range.

For $200, this is an absolute steal. In fact, I had an Artist series jumbo 12-string for many years that was the best sub-$1000 12-string I ever encountered.

I can't comment on whether this particular dread is as good as the jumbo I had, but it's the same series (solid top, laminate b/s).

Anybody who is on the fence or even considering a 12-string - you will never find as good a value for $200, even in the used market (I got $450 Canadian for that Jumbo 12-string when I finally sold it).

Yep -- good deal for someone interested in a quality, low cost 12-string. I sure love my MD80/12...

Nah -- shipping would be a killer for the distributor!

These are probably fine, but having played 12s for 35 years, and having had a lot of duds, I feel qualified to warn you that unless a 12 string is set up just so, has perfect frets and has been gone over by someone competent it can be the most frustrating thing in the world.

That being said, this deal looks like a no-brainer. You can have it made perfect for another $100, and love life.

Played one of these at a local guitar store a couple of months ago. If I were looking for a 12 string dread, this STDOTD is really a no-brainer.

Agree 100%.
I've got an Alvarez ABT-60, a great low-cost ,entry level jumbo, straight acoustic, 6-string baritone guitar. I imagine this 12-string dread is a similar quality build from the same maker.
Tuners will be Grover 'style' and will do the job but give some serious consideration to upgrading to real Grovers if you get the chance.
I have a brand new $50 set of nickel 18:1 Rotomatics from Stewmac ready to swap over when I do the 1st string change, same holes, no drilling, easy straight swap.

Was looking for a good used 12 string when MF ran their SDOTD yesterday. Saw the Alvarez and the price and pulled the trigger. About 24 hours later it was delivered via UPS (two states over). I am really impressed with the guitar and the rapid delivery service. Glad I did it. Sounds great. Sounds like I wanted it to sound and plays easier than any 12 string I have ever played. YMMV

Wow, that's some fast turnaround! Not surprised to hear it's great - as I mentioned before, I've had good experiences with the Alvarez Artist line.
