My GS plays, looks, and sounds great.

But it is so great because it was relatively cheap! I got it used (less than a year old) and cut hundreds off the price.

Taylor has a great factory that can do amazing things that give good results in a massed, automated way. Taylor is thus a great "value" guitar.

On the other hand, if you want to go more high dollar, don't give it to Taylor because that is not what they do best. Taylor is not set up to give your guitar individual attention. For that, your money should be pointed to some smaller shop or custom builder. Bob Taylor, genius that he is and god bless him, will NOT be tap testing your sitka top and voicing it by shaving just a bit more off and resanding the braces.

I'll agree that it's nearly impossible to determine the "best" Taylor, since it's individual preference. My 814ce which is 10 years old now is a great little guitar and my first Taylor so it will always be special. However, the best guitar hands down I have ever played, I purchased on the spot - A 2005 K14ce with an Engl top. I truly believe this little koa guitar is perfect and I'm sure plenty of K owners can attest to the versatility of this tonewood.

At any rate. I've played 410's that were ridiculously good, so it's way too hard to recommend the best...nevermind it's not that hard, anything Koa

best one I've ever played was one of these...

I had a '97 for a while and it was very, very nice...if I were a rich man, Mark's guitar would be coming to Michigan.

Stratfreak, I own a Taylor 110 too and like it a LOT! It may not be the "best" Taylor out there, but it surely is the most underrated Taylor, IMHO. Please don't make the mistake to think of the 110 as only a beginner level guitar that can't be used for some "serious" guitar playing. Just take a look at this video by a hugely talented Taylor 110 player if you're not convinced:

The Taylor 110 seems to be this guy's main guitar. Just proves my point that the 110 is the most underrated Taylor of all.

Cool video (check out his others too). I would say the 110 is an entry level Taylor, but not an entry level guitar.

That one I'll disagree on.
Wasn't the case for me.

The one guitar that I wanted more than my XXX-RS was a Goodall Grand Parlor, Cedar/Rosewood if I recall correctly. It was 2K more than Sophie. Do I still want the Goodall? Yes. Very much so. Will I buy one someday? I might. However I've already ordered a GC7 to satisfy my lust for Cedar/Rosewood combination and as I only play short scale guitars... it's a perfect fit.
Speaking of which I humbly submit my XXX-RS as the perfect Taylor: She's Sitka/Rosewood with gorgeous appointments. I'm working on getting some good pics of her to share.

I own two Goodalls and tried out a McPherson for an entire weekend mainly because it was described as the "the best Goodall" and "Goodall on steroids."

I could not come up with the same conclusions but nevertheless, the McPherson certainly was an awesome guitar and I almost ended up buying it.

Back to the original thread.

My fave Taylor is the one I currently own - 814ce L10 with coco back and sides and sitka top.

Smile The best?

The best is the one you have and love to play. And if you have more, asking about the best is like asking which one of your kids you like best. Or responding to a woman who asks you how old you think she is.

Over the years I have owned the following:
Big Baby, 110, 210, 310, 410, 510, and 810

Every one of them was pretty great in its own way, but I really liked the 510 the best- wish I had never let that one go.

Having recently played a 514, however, I would have to agree with Woodruff- it is just a fantastic instrument- the "best" sounding Taylor I have played yet.

You could spend a lifetime looking for the "best" Taylor- in fact, I believe that would be one definition of GAS.

Enjoy your 110- you have an awesome guitar right there.
