Default Another odd GC visit

Just looking at acoustics, a young guy, flatpicker, overdriving a guitar to the point where all you hear are strings and pick. Then he tells the salesman how happy he is that he found this guitar because it sounds so great.....

I must be getting way too old cause my ears are going.....

Ya but, TB, how many times have you told people to find a guitar that they like.??

I get it... Noise. Hate it.

Poor thing.... Considering the electric guitar's place in modern music, his only reference point was probably some poor quality video of Hendrix torturing a Stratocaster. What did the salesman say?

One of these days, when I happen to be near one, I'm gonna go into a GC just to watch the floor show!

I guess I don't pay much attention to what anybody else does in GC as long as they aren't bothering me. If they are, I leave.

The 2 Guitar Centers by me consolidated into one and the acoustic room is not the best design. Everyone is right on top of each other.

Get in there when they open and lock yourself in the acoustic room.

The kid had skills, he was just overdriving the top. Hearing yourself as others do is the toughest part of guitar playing.

It's taken me years to convince myself I can play.

Then you should go on a Saturday, when all the high school boys are out and about. If you can play anything at all, they will drool over you. Makes you feel like you're better than you probably really are.

I used sponsor a guitar club at our high school. One a new kid came and brought an Squier and a small amp. I’d told the kids acoustic only because it’s hard to keep electrics from getting loud. After I’d shown the kids a few things on my acoustic, including some blues, the boy asked me if I’d show him some things on hs electric. I played the exact same thing I’d just played on my acoustic - I figured that would show him how the were the same instruments. When I was done he asked me if I’d had to take special lesson to learn electric. I truly did not know what to say.

Sometimes that floor show comes with guitars actually falling on the floor.

Tone is SO subjective to begin with, then add to that the profound difference that the listener's perspective (player vs.close listener vs. far listener) and the room/space can have on perceived tone, and things become even more of a moving target.
