[Removed comment. Information would have only been potentially useful to OP and I missed that this was resurrected from the archives from 10 years ago]

IMHO, YMMV, tone is in the hands, etc....
I think I'd pretty well concur with that assessment. The 814ce and 614ce are pretty close in many regard, the 814 having a booming bass and the 614 being a bit brighter and sassier. I have a 614ce and am in the process of trying to find a set of strings that capture the best qualities of both the 814 and 614... and think I'm getting close.

Martin HD-28 is always a good sound and I have an old Epiphone that comes very close to the HD-28. However a Martin D-35 with the right strings (I'm liking the DR Sunbeams for that) will sound big and rich like a 814, but with a Martin vibe.

My "gigging" Taylor is a workhouse and delivers the tone I need. One of the finest cross-overs I have played. 414 FLTD (Nylon), Cedar/Tasmanian Blackwood.

If you're ever in the San Francisco Bay Area, let me know and you can hear for yourself.

Taylor makes great hybrids. Yours is lovely!

OK, I'll play along in that constructive spirit:

Best power: I played a Taylor 718 (or was it an 818?) at a roadshow. Simply the most powerful Taylor I've ever played (and I've played a lot).

Best fingerstyle: My favorite is exactly my GC7. Small body, short scale, 14 fret, cedar-over-EIR. Simply their "best" guitar for fingerstyle.

Best bang-for-buck: Taylor GA3 is the most Taylor you can get in the lowest price for their solid woods.

Best Taylor-esque: Theuir 814 which is the flagship of everything Taylor.

Best small guitar: GS Mini Mahogany.

I don't know if I have the best or even what that is,
but I have all the guitars I want or need.
I am content!

Here is my 2016 510e with Lutz, mahogany, and Taylor's vintage neck shape (it feels great):

Curiously, I have my 414CE for almost three years and it's the Taylor that, to my ears, has a tone closer to a GOOD Gibson acoustic

Despite the OPs absence I'll chime in - of course the best Taylor is the last one I bought..... the 2016 514ce-LTD, red cedar and granadillo.

You'll never find your best Taylor if you're going to listen to all the people who describe their best Taylor. Go play as many as you can and find the one you want using your own criteria of what 'best' would mean for you.
