Joke or not, telling the truth is always the right thing to do.
It may not be the easiest thing to do though.

"And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set ye free." -- John, 8:32
Charles Dickens wrote a whole novel, Great Expectations, contesting this idea. Every character in the novel has their own secrets to keep and sharing them doesn't seem to do any of them any good. |

"When the truth is found to be lies
And all the joy within you dies Don't you want somebody to love Don't you need somebody to love Wouldn't you love somebody to love You better find somebody to love" Jefferson Airplane

true confessions
I have been lying to my 89 year old mother recently. After a nine year absence, I started riding motorcycles a couple years back.
Not sure how my mother suspects, but she has asked me three times in the last several months if I have a motorcycle. Each time I have responded no. A lie. My reason for lying, she will just worry about it and she's prone to worrying, and probably let me know about every accident involving a motorcycle that's in the paper or on the news. I'm 58, I figure I'm old enough to make my own decisions. Wife says I should just tell her. But I ain't, I tell ya. Now, I feel better.

Hope you're okay. Sounds like 18 years culminating. Yea, I'd also be remorseful and I think I understand the context in your message regarding truth. Big sighs all around. Funny that your ex resolved the event with divorce. If it means anything, I'd expect that there would have been some room in her heart for forgiveness if love was truly deep rooted there. Maybe the pain of separation is the lesser of two evils. Just guessing and looking for a silver lining. I hope that the days get brighter for you.
