Glad to hear that you can play again, Bill. I've had a couple injuries/ailments that have forced me to forgo playing the guitar for months at a time, and I know it's no fun at all!

What really worked for me was to keep my attitude clean about the whole thing; I decided that if I was going to think about playing, I would only think about playing well, how much fun I have when playing, all that the guitar and music mean to me... I would not allow any sort of negative thoughts to come in to play, and Man! It was really difficult to not give in to all the evil, negative stuff that was readily available to me...

Even friends, however well-meaning, seemed to express the 'bad" side of things when voicing their concern... I truly did not allow myself the luxury of feeling sorry for myself, not one bit!

In the end, it was all worth it... I can play now, even do gigs. I enjoy playing and singing more than ever, and am filled with so much appreciation for music and the guitar...

Feel good! Have fun when you play! Feel even better, a bit more each day...

It's great to read all the kind words and "feel" the support offered. I really appreciate it.

You show me there is a light at the end of the tunnel Bill. I have adhesive capsulitis in the shoulder (two minor ops and eight months of physio) and a right hand injury (acupuncture and a specialist physio) and am actually working towards ten minutes a day. Whether it is five minutes or ten, they are some of the most enjoyable minutes the day holds! I am not learning songs at present; I am learning patience.

May your healing progress continue! I would be lost without being able to play music.

Hey Bill !~!~!

Glad your back. What guitar(s) are you playing?

I ask because arthritis set me back, shoulder and elbow, and switching from dreads to OM/000's and only 1-3/4" nuts helped tremendously.

If I play a dread more than 15 minutes the elbow starts up, longer the shoulder kicks in, so guitar size/nut width changes really helped in my case.

Therapy certainly helped me too, did you make any instrument changes?

Welcome back.......

I do not notice much of a difference between OM and Dreads but it amazes me what a big difference it makes to most people. It is usually an extra 1" in width and total length but it is obviously a game changer for many people. I do notice the volume difference. Glad it save you.

I'm 66, quite a few of my playing buddies have either switched to or added OM/000's to their guitars. You lose some low end dread rumble, but you gain comfort and balance. A friend leaves his CS HD-28 Madagascar here and I barely touch it, there is life after dreads.........

Best of luck, Col. I had all but given up a couple of times over these last two years. Stick with it and good things just might happen.

Hey, Rich. I own a 00, an OM, an SJ and a Dread. As far as I can tell, none causes any more pain than the others. I know that many folks with shoulder problems can't handle dreads, but that doesn't seem to be the case with me.

Thanks for taking the time to offer advice though. I appreciate it.

Great to hear you are recovering but you might want to have someone check out your playing posture. Poor posture leads to joint injuries more than anything else. There is a good chance your elbow may start to hurt again as you increase your playing time.

Just a suggestion.

I'm sure that you are right. I am self-taught and never played more than a few hours/week prior to 2005 when I started investigating fingerstyle. By 2012 I was playing three hours/day. It took about six months for the pain to become apparent. Even my right wrist became sore (along with my left elbow, shoulder, and index finger). I'm sure some lessons would correct some of the problem.

Thanks.
