Am G F E is such a great progression. There are so many songs that follow that pattern. You really do need to learn it focusing on the desending base line. At other times your simplified F is just dandy, I am sure but with this progression you need to travel down that road straight to the bottom.
"Some people say a man is made out of mud, a poor man's made out of muscle and blood." Am, Am/G, F/F, E.

You can also play it with pure bar chords. Using the E pattern bar. Am on the 5th fret, slide to G on the 3rd, F on the 1st, the open E.

Now I'll be singin' that one all day.

Something else to consider. If you are having trouble playing an F chord correctly chances are you are a fairly new guitar player. If you are a new guitar player chances are you may have a pretty crappy guitar. (No offense we all did) Check the height of your strings at the nut. If they are too high an F will be super hard to play. Compare it to how high it is if you put a capo on the first fret.

I've heard it called "old-school" F.

It's a complete F--it's just higher in the register.

Free the cowboy F.

I don't understand why you don't just play the full 1st position F chord, then you have the facility for pull offs and hammer on in the D & G strings.

Cuz' it's hard I would imagine. I understand that. He will get it in time. But for now he just wants to play. But he should keep working on it!

I still think he should check his string height at the nut.

Yes, there's no problem using that. Keep in mind, there are no real rules, so experiment to your heart's content. You might also try some substitutions. For example, depending on the song, I'll sometimes use this F6 as a substitute for a F when fingerpicking.

D 0

I wrap my thumb around the top to grab the root and use my index and middle to grab the other two notes.
