My recollection is shaky but there was an men's gymnast who did his routine on the rings despite knowing he had a fracture in his leg. He did the full aerial dismount and landing, only taking the weight off after holding the appropriate time. Must have been excruciating but he mustered the will to go ahead.

Sydney, 2000. "Eric the Eel," the African swimmer who wild carded into the 100m men's freestyle. Self-trained, his first time swimming in an Olympic-length pool was at the event. Only 3 in his heat and the other 2 both false-started - DQ. Eric then had to swim, alone. His time was nearly 3x the top swimmers' time and he almost didn't finish, but he became a legend.

My favorite was the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics gold medal hockey game. Sidney Crosby scores the golden goal in OT to win the game for Team Canada. The ratings in Canada for that game were crazy with most households watching.

Has to be that for sure.
On the other hand, my nephew is at the Olympic swim trials right now, so I hope he makes the team. |

That and Bruce Jenner. I actually missed the first showing of the Miracle. Even knowing the outcome, the replay was incredibly exciting. The last minute is still amazing to watch. The tension on both sides is overpowering.

One of my favorite moments was fairly personal.
I grew up in YMCA and AAU competitive swimming in Ohio and on quite a few occasions swam against Ross Wales http://www.ishof.org/ross-wales-(usa).html, who was a terrific butterfly swimmer and a really nice guy. I remember seeing him set a national record for 100-yard butterfly while he was still in high school. I was pretty excited to see Ross Wales win a bronze medal in the 100m butterfly in the 1968 Olympics behind Mark Spitz (silver) and Doug Russell (gold). I think it was the third time I had seen someone I knew win an Olympic medal in swimming. It was pretty cool. - Glenn

Some great results for Britain the year we hosted it and a fantastically successful games all around, (contrary to the predictions of many cynics, myself included).
