Two California teenagers who recently visited the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art were less than impressed by some of the exhibits and wondered if they could do better.

And thus a scheme was hatched: They placed a pair of eyeglasses on the floor, stood back and watched as, within minutes, visitors regarded their prank as a work of art, with some even taking photos of the fake installation.

At this point in the thread I think it would be helpful if we consider Sturgeon's Law, which states that 90% of everything is crap. In other times and in other eras there has been a lot of crap in the art scene. We don't know about it now because since it was crap, it didn't make the cut of things deemed historically or artistically relevant.

So when folks start to heap abuse on "modern art" it's probably justified in a larger sense, but really it's no different than art in any time. We look back at the collected 10% of other eras and forget that 90% because it was forgetable.

to me, at this moment, it's an insightful commentary on the myopic nature of modern existence, while we search for meaning in the most mundane of objects, housed in the most banal of ways, temporarily hoping to fulfill our pressing desire for true vison as it relates to art, society, and contemporary life, as the fog of grime and the scratches of life obscure our dreams.

A couple of years ago I bought tickets to an "Evening With Art." Very, very articulate fellow. He read stories he had written, poems and sang a few songs.

What remains of Art? Well, his voice still sounds pretty good for someone suffering from vocal cord paresis, and he has trouble with the high notes. Still sounded pretty good on the Jimmy Webb classic, All I Know, but could not sing the entire Bridge Over Troubled Waters.

The venue was a small intimate theatre that sat less than 250. He even had a Q&A session and I got to ask him a question. Very cool.

So help me with the math...does that mean that only 9% of everything is crap?

I think about 20% of Sturgeon's law is accurate.

And then, there are sturgeon laws....

from my amateur perspective, i think the 90% rule is part of the 10% that isn't crap, so no math required.

i did quick search on sturgeon's law, and there is a law firm called sturgeon law.

http://sturgeonlaw.com/home.html

amazingly enough, they don't have a motto/slogan. off the top of my head, they could at least go with, "we cut through the legal crap".
