No pinky planting for me on the classical guitar, I find it to be completely unnecessary. The term 'planting' in classical guitar speak usually refers to fingers of the right hand touching the strings for various reasons, e.g., http://www.classicalguitardelcamp.co...hp?f=6&t=74461

You are right about that. I should have specified pinkie planting.

Oops! I didn't realize I was answering a thread in the Classical Guitar Forum where the normal rules do not apply. Like Mister Mxyzptlk, I'll just say my name backwards and return to my own Dimension.

I came from pinkie planting, PMI picking (3 finger), and hand position held at 45 degrees to the strings. I started trying to fix those things at the age of 27 and they were all difficult and took a bunch of time.

FYI: It is not a coincidence that I also bought my first classical guitar and book at the age of 26.

I agree and I, too, didn't realize this was in the context of classical guitar - I thought it was general acoustic playing.

oops, back to your elevated pinky y'all

[QUOTE=fazool;4635371]By "can" do you mean allowable and permitted? By whom, exactly?

Allowable.
And by most teachers of clessical guitar technique, worldwide. I'm afraid I can't name them all.

Pinky planting makes sense in thumb and two finger playing where the middle finger is used for picking the 1st string and the middle finger needs
to get to different strings quickly and accurately. Throw in a thumb pick where the thumb side of the palm can get a little more distance from the
strings, and where the thumb is less able to steady the hand, and it makes a bit more sense. Anything that steadies the hand helps with greater speed,
accuracy, and even tone. Of course it limits what you can play (e.g. a lot of my tunes need thumb and three, or sometimes thumb and four) but what
you do play may come out better. As far as a habit, it's is probably better to be able to go in and out of things than to be stuck in a certain technique.
