Phil Jones "Pup"
I just received a Phil Jones "Cub" acoustic guitar amp, which I understand to be something new in their line up. It was demo'd for me in my shop by the rep and sounded quite good so I thought I'd try one with an eye toward supplying them, or something like them, to my customer base. I spent a few hours today messing with it and my ToneDexter and I am getting a MUCH more beautiful sound that I was able to achieve with my significantly more powerful Shertler Unico. Haven't taken it to work yet, so the jury is still out. Has anyone else experienced this Amp? And what is the general opinion?

I'm a huge fan of the Phil Jones Acoustic amps. After trying or owning about every acoustic amp out there I settled on a couple of Phil Jones amps. Both Cubs. One is the 300 Watt Super cub for larger stages or outside gigs and the other is the Cub 150. Hard to make these amps sound bad really.

"Cub", not "Pup".
I hadn't yet learned the name of my new amp when I started this thread, and I don't know how to change a title, so know that this puppy is actually called a Cub.
Anyway, here are some pictures of the tiny thing, with my Archtop to put it in perspective: |

Seeing the heat sinks in the rear, which indicate that Phil Jones uses the more-expensive-per-watt, old-school and sonically superior Class A/B power amp design (instead of the now ubiquitous Class D design) is a pleasant surprise.
I'm sure that the Cub does indeed sound wonderful. |

Hi Bruce,
Did you try a dreadnought? I wonder how it takes the low end? Also how does it amplifies the vocals? I think Schertler Unicos (at least the old ones are class AB) Cuki [QUOTE=Bruce Sexauer;5512167]I hadn't yet learned the name of my new amp when I started this thread, and I don't know how to change a title, so know that this puppy is actually called a Cub.

This is what I have only in the custom wood case instead of Tolex. Just fantastic amps. Have never tried a vocal mic through mine. I suspect it would be OK but I don't think it's what they are really going for in this amp.
