Default Finish removal/prep

I converted a way-cheap acoustic steel string into a resonator guitar last year:

Brought it to the point of functionality and kind of left it at that. I just play it around the house....
I decided to go ahead and finish the thing, and last night I lowered to action to the point I could fret it while still playing slide and I finished the "biscuit" with stain and poly finish...Etc.
Now, I would like to remove the finish on the face of the guitar and likely just paint it to cover up the filled-in soundhole area.
The existing finish is a rather thin layer of clear-coat. Should I just sand it?
Or maybe just break the glaze and paint over it?
I envision painting it black with perhaps some artsy figures and then applying a coat of poly finish.
