Repair/renovation advice for Eko Ranger 12
Hey all,
I just bought a Ranger 12 Eko for £15, and its in a pretty dire condition. I bought it because it was cheap, and I thought it would be a fun project to keep me occupied. In general, all it really needs is new machine-heads, a new saddle and a general clean up. Now, I've already discovered that the machine-heads are awkward due to their 118mm spacing! I know of somewhere I can get it for £30, but anyone know where I can get them cheaper? Or if there are any better options? I'm pretty sure I know how to change them once I get them, its just the getting them that's the problem! The clean-up is relatively easy as I have polish etc. The only problem is cleaning up the inside of the body... I'm kinda tempted to stick a Henry nozzle down in there and just hope for the best I can do. But that doesn't matter too much. Its really the bridge and saddle that I need help with/advice for. The current one is functional, but very worn. The result is that some of the strings, especially the high and low Es, slip out of place every so often. So I want to change the saddle, but not the whole bridge.. I have a blank saddle to put in, but I don't quite know how, given the mechanism on the Ranger 12 bridge. Do I need to buy something specific, or will an everyday 12 string one do? How do I properly fit it in? More especially, do I need to file grooves for the strings in order to keep them in place, and if so then how best do I do that? Basically any advice or help I can get I would very much appreciate! Thanks in advance folks, Big Foz |

I still haven't received any advice on this matter, and am certainly still in need. I welcome anything and whatever anyone can tell me!

Internet triage is fun!
tuners: you might want to just replace the guts on these. you might have to kit bash some things together. i have no idea on where to get those things for any price. saddle: you don't need to do anything with the bridge (unless it's lifting) other then a decent clean up. you're gonna need to pull that saddle out and look at the ends. there should be some kind of ledge or step or tab that would fit into a groove cut into into the elevation screws on either side. your new saddle needs to fit into those features. the one you show in your pics might fit. if not try to avoid bone as it might chip out under that extreme string angle set-up. Looks like a late 60's Gibson adjustable saddle style. Yes, I'm afraid IMO you'll have to slot the saddle too. According to your pics those bridge pins are spaced rather poorly and it doesn't look like you have any other choice. Nut files should work here. links: http://www.frets.com/ http://www.stewmac.com/ http://www.lmii.com/ http://www.allparts.com http://www.guitarsaddles.com/ http://www.bluescreekguitars.com/ Is a Henry nozzle a vacuum nozzle? it'll work ok for dead and dried things if it fits. |

It's a shame that the bridge design means that the strings have to bend as they leave the saddle. Somewhere I've seen a solution that involved a kind of saddle nut between the saddle and the pins. The saddle was not grooved. There was a second piece after the saddle that had the grooves and stopped the strings slipping sideways. Anyone got pics of this?

@arie: Thanks a lot! That really helped. I've got the new saddle working enough, for now, though the action is still really high! But still, thanks for advice. I did mean a vacuum. I don't know how clean it will really make it, cos it doesn't really have that much movement space, but still. Better than a kick in the teeth I guess.
@eugenro2001: Good links. I'll take a look closely at the ebay item, as it seems like exactly what I need. Thanks! Also, the double bridge nut idea is pretty sweet! @stanron: I didn't realise how weird the bridge design was until I actually had to put strings on it the first time and then I just went "wait.. WTF?". Its a shame because, as demonstrated, it just makes things unnecessarily awkward. I've never seen a 12 string like that before. |
