Default Exercise for finger independence and control

Here's a video I almost didn't upload because I thought it would be too boring and no one would watch it. But to my surprise, it's had almost a million views.

I have a little Traveler guitar in my desk drawer at work, and most days I'll run thru this exercise by muting the strings with my picking hand and just doing the fretting hand exercise. I may just do one or two patterns up the neck (which just takes 2-3 minutes), then go back to work. Usually I can get thru all 24 patterns in a day. The key is to do this SLOWLY so that your hand stays RELAXED. This will train your muscle memory to get those fingers obeying you more and more when you pick up the tempo.

The TAB for the exercise is available HERE

Almost a million + 1 views. Great stuff David. Thanks for posting that. Incidentally, I had several of your site's pages open on my browser over the last week or so (lots of good stuff there) and went to reload them and they're now gone, so it looks like you just did a revamp of your site, or I stumbled onto an old version. Thanks again.

Thanks! Yes, I migrated to a new - hopefully better - website on Saturday.

MasterGuitarists.com

Hopefully I'll be adding a LOT of additional content this year.

Very good stuff indeed, David... thanks! I've actually always enjoyed doing finger exercises very much like these. I can sit and do them while watching TV or just killing time. I think it's from doing so many as a piano player. Thanks for posting.

I've always done something similar, but just what I call "the worm", going up chromatically on the low e and then back down the a, up the d, etc.

Good exercises. I'm going to try some of yours.

With fingerstyle, rather than playing a single note line, it can often be a rub your belly and pat your head kind of thing. Then it's mind control and finger control.
You just have to work through it.

For example:

Default Appreciated this a lot

Just starting on guitar after 50 years of woodwinds. This gives me great guidance to avoid making bad muscle memories. TY

A new tweak for this exercise.

Try doing it with your fretting fingers just LIGHTLY touching the strings (don't press down at all). You should see some pretty good results using this approach!
