Sometimes when I travel, I watch FOXNews (under duress) because that's what's always on in hotel breakfast rooms. I think they won't sell hotels a make-your-own Belgian waffle station without a pledge to have their flatscreens play only FOXNews. (Maybe they'll repo the waffle irons if guests report that CNN or GMA was playing instead).

Also airports ... I insert the plugs when I get near it and remove them after I've left the destination airport. Last edited by Kerbie; 10-12-2017 at 02:05 PM. Reason: Edited quote |

I stopped watching news and reading the newspaper nearly 20 years ago... I just realized that I never felt very good after ingesting the media's version of what was important.
So, I stopped. Nowadays, social media makes it more difficult to not get sucked in to some adverse drama, but at the same time, if something's SO IMPORTANT that all my friends are commenting on it, then I'll check it out. It is quite difficult to get the facts on any issue without having to deal with whatever "slant" the source is putting on the story... Oh... by the way? I feel a LOT better when I'm not involved with "headlines" every day...

Drudge Report for me, they don't write any news, they just link it. So one reads articles from Wall Street Journal, NY Times etc. etc.

None in particular.
It's the idea itself of demoting news to a shopping experience of preferences that bothers me. We are moving away from being well informed. A well informed citizenry is good for a democracy. Last edited by Tico; 10-12-2017 at 04:15 PM. |

I’m not sure I understand how this is any different than making the decision to purchase The NY Times, Washington Post, or The Wall Street Journal and then choosing specific articles to read in newsprint format. When I use an aggregator I don’t select stories, I set my preferences to a group of news outlets that I trust and like. I also have a couple I dont typically like so I can check out countervailing views. It is true I filter out celebrity, sports and other “soft” news, but I dont restrict International, National, Financial, etc.

Do you wear earplugs because of fox news or cnn?. I missed the jist of the post. Because I've never seen Fox News at the gate TV at a domestic airport... Any airport for that matter. I think most of CNN viewership is from airports.

I gotta say, I don't watch the news anymore. It's so freeing and just too depressing and unsettling to follow right now.

If a restaurant or bar has a TV on I'll leave. Even just waiting at line at a bank we're being forced to watch media. I've seen people driving cars watching movies on screens ... not just the kids in the rear seats. And don't get me started on texting while driving. Whatever happened to just being alone with your thoughts, or experiencing what is happening to you and around you at the time? Be here now, and all that. No, everyone must be plugged into social media or be consuming entertainment every moment. |
