Time to Begin Christmas Shopping
So, my youngest son has headed back to college. Had to make sure he didn't take my Gibson Songwriter with him as that's always been his favorite, but I refuse to part with it. There are times when that's the perfect tone for a song (especially for some of the Eagles music). I haven't played any of the newer Gibsons and would likely need to make a field trip to Fort Wayne to get any reasonable selection as no one locally has many to review. And have heard that quality there is hit or miss these days. I'd like to spend no more than $2,000. He likes the tone of the spruce/rosewood and doesn't care about fancy inlays.
Got any recommendations for something to consider? I want to start looking around, but know that the forum members can give some great guidance. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

My youngest graduated this past May after 4 years of dorming. I'd get him a decent beater for school, save the good one for a graduation present.

My Yamaha A5R is quite nice. Tusq nut and saddle, Elixirs, all solid Indian Rosewood back and sides, A.R.E. Sitka spruce top, SRT electronics, and a hardshell case. Made in Japan. If you're after an American made guitar I'd go for a Taylor 414ce with the Rosewood back and sides.

To the OP ... I have a suggestion.
A quick google of the Gibson Songwriter (which you state is your son's favorite guitar) shows the Internet price is around $2,500. Perhaps you could negotiate one down to your budget of $2,000. Good luck.

A quick look on Reverb shows a few used Songwriters under the 2K mark...

I know very little about Gibsons, so I don't know the difference between a Songwriter, Montana Songwriter, Deluxe Songwriter, Studio Deluxe etc.
But there are 30 guitars by Gibson called a Songwiter on reverb for under $2k. I'd probably lean towards a J-15 myself, but that's Walnut, not Rosewood.

All good suggestions. I've been thinking about a J15 myself, so when Gibson was mentioned my thoughts went there. Sometimes a different tonewood combo can be a good thing. One reason I cannot only have one guitar....
