To ensure there are no contaminants on the wood surface, after finish sanding, I wipe the wood down with naptha dampened on a clean rag, along the grain, let that dry, then wipe down again with a dry rag. Then, I will do a wipe with shellac to protect the wood and seal it before pore filling.

Having also sprayed automotive finishes in my life, careful prep work is key, especially cleaning the surface of contaminants prior to doing any finish work. In my experience, I've sealed wood with either thinned varnish and shellac prior to applying varnish. Stuff like using coated sandpaper could cause adhesion problems if you do not wipe down the surface as mentioned above.
