Default Micing Your Guitar

Does it really make any difference which mike you use? I have never done this but have a setup to do it but only have standard microphones. How well would these work?

My reason for asking is mostly this information.

When someone wants to mic their acoustic at our weekly O/M, we just use a Shure SM-58 and it works fine.

Using a mic is tricky. I use an SM-57, but only when I am assured that I won't have to feed much signal back to the monitor.

If you listen carefully you can hear me going out the back door to the bathroom somewhere around the forty minute mark. Just kidding - you can't hear it. But I was there at the seminar at AES NY 2009 and did, in fact, sneak out to the john for two minutes around the three quarters point.

SM58 works for me. Usually on a boom stand in front of the soundhole.

When using an amplifier, I've experimented with off axis placement, the distance from the speaker, and recorded an electric solo with my open back amp about 5 or 6 feet from the (closed) end of a hallway, the 58 facing the back of the amp slightly above the midline of the speaker cones halfway between the amp and the wall.

Second mic, an SM57 was out into the room the hallway opened onto several feet away about halfway between the carpet and ceiling.

That track (old analog 4 track) made it onto the CD we recorded at FJM Audio in Dayton, Ohio.

Had the best sound quality, couldn't get any better on the studio's professional gear.

It seems that the mics I have will work fine. I guess all those expensive mics the music industry are selling are an excellent marketing ploy. Not surprising.

Interesting I have seen that video numerous times and missed the exit sounds I will have to go to my studio to see if I can hear it ( Oh wait apparently if I can't hear on my laptop speakers I would simply be imagining it on My Amphions or Senn 600 )

While no doubt Winer and friends bring up "some good " points and I assume makes adequate (if ironically over priced) acoustic absorption panels . From this and numerous other statements , it strikes that Winer seems to be on some kind of crusade ? His even bringing up $150 jars of rocks seems more like late night TV ad promo than objective information sharing .
