Build Thread: Mark Gaiero Mod D
Well for many who know me on this forum, they know how much I love acoustic guitars! After the tragic passing of my friend Tom Doerr, I was kind of on the hunt for a builder or two to be working with on new builds. After a lot of research I decided to place a deposit with Mark Gaiero of Gaiero guitars. https://www.gaieroguitars.com
This will be Mark's first Gaiero Modified Dreadnought model but he made several Somogyi Mod D's while an Apprentice of Ervin's. In chatting a few times with Mark, I decided to go with a very old Carpathian Spruce top and Ziricote for the woods on this model. I also decided to go with a flamed maple neck after seeing a photo of one Mark did on another guitar. We are still discussing inlays details for this build but Mark sent some photos that I thought I'd share with everyone on here. The back and sides with original Mod D outline drawn. The Neck wood Bending the sides The bent sides Putting the back together

This will be a fun build to follow Bobby. Nice tonewood choices and receiving Mark Gaiero's first Mod D will be something really special.

Very cool. That Ziricote already looks stunning. I'm sure it will be even more so when the finish is on. Looking forward to following the progress.

That's one of the most beautiful and interesting sets I've ever seen.....and it's not even under finish yet! I looked at Mark's website, and I admire his ethos in seeking to work with sustainable woods. I think that is one of the more exciting contributions of this Renaissance of single luthier built guitars. The scarcity of traditional woods is giving birth to new ideas and designs with lesser known species, that I have no doubt will also make exceptional guitars in the right hands. |

I will echo others, that is a great set of Ziricote, particularly the sides which often take a back seat to the full back, but the grain in these sides is simply stunning. Carpathian spruce is also a fine choice. One of my favorite builders really favors Carpathian for tops.

Looks amazing so far!
Just curiously, why did you decide to go with Ziricote for the back/sides? |

Just wanted a more rosewood sound mainly, a lot of the wood choices Mark offers are more like Mahogany or Walnut in tone and less like Rosewood. Ziricote and Granadillo are the more rosewood like species that he specializes in and I've always Ziricote is a beautiful wood to look at as well!

Congrats Bobby!! What a stunner!! Just spent some time on his web site....super interesting and informative.
Yes, was thinking about Tom Doerr today as a matter of fact, as I just completed a tune on the Legacy which always takes me back to the build he completed in '14. This will be a great build to follow!!

I’m not sure, you’d have to ask Mark on that one.

Forget the ziricote; that neck blank is almost certainly the best tiger-stripe flamed maple I've ever seen, anywhere.
