Default Must Visit Guitar Shops In Manhattan?

I'm going to try to visit a couple of guitar shops in an upcoming visit to New York City. I'm going to be spending a lot of time downtown. Any suggestions for "must see" guitar shops?

Oh, I see. You're asking a question. Sorry, I can't help you. I thought you were just repeating, like some wild-eyed zombie or something, staggering around repeating aimlessly, "Must visit guitar shops in Manhattan, must visit guitar shops in Manhattan, must visit..."

cotten

Wait, maybe you were doing both...

I have been known to have a zombie-like focus whenever it comes to guitars.

It depends what you like.

Around Times Square, you have Rudy's Music Stop and Sam Ash on 48th right across the street from one another. Rudy's has a nice selection of boutique and small shop guitars -- Santa Cruz, Collings, Froggy Bottom, etc. Sam Ash has a good selection of Martin, Taylor, Gibson, and Larrivee.

In lower Manhattan, you have Matt Uminov Guitars and Guitar Center. They are a quick cab ride from one another. Uminov has a relatively small, but well chosen and diverse selection of small builders (Collings), big builders (Martin) and vintage instruments (Martin, Gibson). Guitar Center has a good selection of Martin, Gibson, and Taylor (but go before noon to avoid all the American Idol wannabees). There is also Rudy's SoHo store, which I have not been to, but gets good reviews.

In Staten Island, you have my favorite shop in the world -- Mandolin Brothers. It takes a little effort to get there (Staten Island ferry and a 10 minute cab ride), but you are richly rewarded once you arrive with a welcoming environment, wonderful staff, and an extraordinary selection of instruments, spanning the entire spectrum from new to vintage, big builders to small builders...you name it.

In my opinion, Mandolin Brothers is clearly the #1. It has all that the others have in one spot. But if you don't have the time to trek out to Staten Island, the shops on 48th Street are great and offer a lot of variety -- everything but vintage.

Have fun!

I put in another vote for Rudy's (both 48th St and Soho locations) and Matt Uminov. Guitar Center is a good one on 14th St.

While it may be a little light on the acoustic side, I like going to 30th Street Guitars - a lot of great stuff there (vintage and new).

It's on...

... wait for it...

30th Street...

As another posted, Mandolin Brothers is worth the trip to Staten Island. Nothing like it in the world.

Another vote for Mando Bros. I bought my custom OM-18 Special from Stan last year. I'd buy my next guitar from them in a heartbeat.

Umanov guitars, Rudys Soho, Mandolin Bros ... three great shops with their own personality, stock selection and 'quirkiness'.

I was just there last week and would have to vote for Rudy's on 48th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues). Their high-end room is really something... a very nice collection of the top guitar makers. They offer a wide selection of acoustics. I have found the Sam Ash across the street to have a much greater percentage of low-end or starter guitars. So, it kinda depends on what exactly you're looking for. Both shops have a lot of guitars. And I have always found Rudy's employees to be more helpful.

One thing for sure is you'll see a lot of guitars in NYC. Have great times!
