Help! String Breakage
I bought a slightly used (2009) Martin DC-16RGTE Aura a few weeks ago and had it set up by my luthier who also installed a bone saddle. Wednesday night I broke 2 strings - D and G - one at the first open-mic and the 2nd slightly later at another. Yesterday I changed the D'Addario 16's I had on thinking maybe they were slightly (old-even though they're sealed in that space age plastic) and put on a set of GHS Laurence Juber's my friend gave me at the NAMM Show.. Last night I broke the G string at yet another open-mic.
I am a hard strummer at times- but haven't broken a string on my other gits in a long time. Could it be the new saddle? They are breaking down there and not at the nut.. My luthier is one of the best around and does really great work- but do you think it could be the new saddle slots breaking in? I am using 12's. I have mediums or bluegrass on my Taylor 314ce but this Martin was not loving the bluegrass set I originally had my luthier put on- so I switched to 12's.. Martin makes an in-between set (12.5 etc)- do you think that might help? Mike

It would be worth having the saddle looked at. Even great techs make mistakes sometimes or miss something.

If the strings are breaking down by the saddle, I suspect that the break angle is too steep and/or the saddle is not rounded enough on the top...I like to polish mine with very very fine sandpaper & buff it with an old cloth that has some lemon oil residue in it....A close-up picture would give us a better idea what's going on....

Yea - it all seems to point to the saddle. That amount of "new" breakage just after a new saddle - don't think you need to bring CSI in. Well maybe the AGF version of CSI.

My diagnosis of D&G strings breaking at the saddle is, "Playing too hard".

Playing too hard is probaly the problem, that and the fact the saddle is new. Would need too look at the break angle.

I am leaning towards the break angle theory, as my new saddle is - well, new.. and higher than I'm used to. Looks like I'm going back to the shop- I love this guitar and can't wait to strum the daylights out of it again! PS- I fingerpick too! Mike
