Jim Ryun....

Today, over 40 years after he set them, Ryun still holds the American junior (19 and under) records at 880 yd (1:44.9), 800 m (1:44.3), 1,500 m (3:36.1), and two miles (8:25.1). In all, he broke the American record for the mile four times: once as a high school senior (3:55.3 on 27 June 1965), twice as a college freshman (3:53.7 on 4 June 1966 & 3:51.3 on 17 July 1966), and once as a college sophomore (3:51.1 on 23 June 1967).

Default Jim Palmer

Been avoiding this thread for a while now...

For me, I've always wanted to be a pitcher, a goalie, and I've been lucky to have been both.

This was the one guy who inspired me... him and Steve Stone.

Big George Foreman. I'll never forget when he won the gold medal in Mexico City, and then waved that little American flag. "sniff"

Jim Palmer could pitch! 3 Cy Youngs in a 4 year span. That includes 8 20 win seasons in a 9 year span. That's amazing. (I googled that)

I think it just happens that the majority of members posting in this thread are male, and have had male role models.

There are certainly amazing female athletes.
Gabby Douglas, Dominique Mocciano (sp?), are just two that immediately pop into my mind.

Sure was fun watching Thome mash a baseball into the upper decks, though.

Yep. I knew a girl back in the '80s and her favorite athlete was Martina Navratilova. Worth mentioning it because she was a great tennis player.

They're allowed so long as when you posting a picture of them that picture isn't sexually suggestive. We do have rules about that sort of thing, this being a family-friendly forum and all.

Mike Tyson. No one got my adrenaline pumping like him. He might not have been a nice guy in his younger days, but he was just way too young to deal with his lifestyle. I don't believe that he did all of what he was accused of either.

Yeah, I've been a die-hard Tyson fan since I first heard about him in the 80's. He sure brought the excitement! There was a series called "Being Mike Tyson" or something like that a few weeks ago. I don't know what happened to it, though. The first two episodes were somewhat interesting.

Hey, if your favorite athelete is a woman go ahead. Personally, to be my favorite athelete I have to be able to identify with the person. Put myself in their place. Why? Because otherwise I don't fully appreciate what they did.

I wrestled, played the line in football, threw the field events and rode mountainbikes competitively.

So my top faves are Alexander Karelin, Brian Oldfield, Ned Overend, and Cedric Hardman.

It also helps if they were active during my formative years. That's when they made their impression.

Remember the old "Superstars" competition? Here's Brian Oldfield, a giant shotputter coming in second in the 100yd dash to Lynn Swann
