Default Uke Shopping in Kauai - Tips?

The wife and I are vacationing in Kauai this week and I'm looking to buy my first ukulele (probably a tenor), perhaps even locally made. I want something legit that will be playable and enjoyable in the future (not just looking for a souvenir). We'll be visiting Scotty's Music tomorrow and I'm looking for tips on uke shopping. All inputs are appreciated. Mahalo!

Sorry, can't help. But I can tell you that on Kaua`i there's a lot less shopping - in general - as compared to O`ahu, Maui, and the Big Island.

Will this be your first trip to Kaua`i? Where on the island will you be staying?

First trip to Kaua'i and we're slumming it at the Grand Hyatt my wife and I honeymooned on Waikiki back in 2006 and you're right, it's very different on the Garden Island but that's why we wanted to come here.

Kaua'i is my favorite island unless I am specifically on a scuba diving trip, but I am not that familiar with their music stores. I usually bring a Fluke or Flea from home. Not sure if Bounty Music still has a shop on Kaua'i or not. There is a real nice music store (cannot remember the name) in the main shopping center downtown Hanalei. While there I highly recommend that you catch Doug and Sandy McMaster's show - uke and slack-key guitar. www.hawaiianslackkeyguitar.com/

We last visited Kaua`i in 2006 so things may have changed, but at that time Scotty's Music had the best prices and one of the nicest selections of `ukulele in the state of Hawai`i.

Expect to pay more if buying in Hawaii.

Other then that, there is a LOT of junk is stores for tourists to buy. As a musician, you'll know them when you see them, pick them up, or play them! But like with any instrument, play a bunch! Some will definitely sound and play better than others to you!

Default Uke Shopping in Kauai - Tips?

Thanks to all for the tips. I ended up at Scotty's today and played a bunch of ukes. I ended up purchasing a tenor uke made by Raymond Rapozo, a local Kauai builder (www.ukuleledirect.com/). It was twice my desired price range, but certainly spoke to me more than the rest. It was also my wife's favorite. It's solid koa over solid mahogany with a koa fretboard. So I'll be on the lanai overlooking the pool, serenading the sunbathers for the next 6 days. Life is good!
