Default Looking for a cheap improvement to a tascam 424mkII 4 track...compressor or tube pre?

I`m thinking either a behringer mdx1600 or some sort of art tube pre.Any suggestions?

What would make my recordings sound a tad less...muddy and demo-y?

Pre-amp/comp: JoeMeek VC3. Great for guitar & voice - especially great for voice.

I still kind of like cassettes, but if you're looking for more clarity and a more current/professional sound it makes more sense to get a decent interface (probably with built in clean mic pres) and go digital than to put an outboard preamp before a cassette recorder.
