Default New Mic Day

A month or so ago I became an AKG endorsee. My very own 414 came in the mail the other day from Austria. Oh baby!

Maybe, but I'm on a big single mic kick right now. My last two albums were single mic...

Looking forward to hearing you put that new C414 through its paces, Eric! Would love a full, totally unbiased review from you.

It's wonderful, neutral mic. Funny, I've used their mics for thirty-five years and even reviewed their mics but I've never been offered an endorsement deal...

Default Aloha Eric

Aloha Eric,

Great instrument mic choice. They keep making the 414 XLII better & better. So nice on a guitar. I made a solo acoustic album with a 414 back in 1979! That mic's a real classic, it may be the "Swiss army knife" studio mic of all time, even for backing vocals. You can use it on anything. Congratulations on your endorsement deal. All the best, Eric.

Congratulations Eric on your endorsement deal and your new mic - very cool!

I see you have the 414 XLII model. Wondering how It compares for recording acoustic guitar to the fairly similar 414 XLS model.

If you or anyone else has any thoughts on how they compare/contrast I'd be interested in hearing.

Get this: Ours is so old that it is one of the rare "AKG C414 Comb" models from 1971.

Which just proves how rare it is that we get rid of anything. I've also got an RCA BK-5B ribbon from the 50s sitting on my desk, waiting for repairs. Green body, brown cord! The mic is fine, by the way, the rubber vibration dampening mechanism on the mount (inside that stainless cylinder) needs to be replaced. I'm thinking of machining down a stack of rubber washers to fit.

The XLII has a slightly exaggerated top boost vs. the XLS which is more neutral. AKG sells it by saying the XLII has the character of the c12. It's really just that they shifted the boost a little lower (around 5k I think) and make it slightly more pronounced (like 2db tops, depending on the polar pattern).

Both excellent mics IMHO.

Hi John. Well, being an endorsee makes unbiased reporting understandably pretty suspect. But I will say I have used and loved the 14 series of AKG mics for many years, both in the studio and on stage. I think they’re quality people making a quality product, and I couldn’t be any happier with the mic.

Thanks. I’m constantly thinking back about how nice that event was!

I’ll put in a good word for ya Bob!
It was kind of an out of the blue thing. They said they liked some of my Youtube videos that feature a single 214…

Hi Steve. I agree with the other Steve below, that the The XLII has that top boost, which is something I gravitate towards for steelstring guitar. And maybe years on just being in recording situations where I came away thinking, “ I really like the gold one.”
