He shoots, He scores - 1985 Somogyi Mod D
Purchased a Somogyi today from Luthier's Collection in the San Diego area. Its my third overall purchase there. Great place to do business. Anyway, I had auditioned quite a few Somogyis there over the years and was kind of at the point where I thought that, while they were obviously great guitars, they didn't suit my style all that well. I never met one that I had to have (so to speak). Especially the Mod D's. I always thought they were too big and had "too much sound" if you know what I mean. Well, last week I found an old 1985 Mod D that was in absolutely beautiful condition (Sitka/Brazilian). The original owner claimed that the guitar had maybe 25 hrs. of playing time on her. The only flaw was the saddle was down about as far as possible, but the guitar played flawlessly (Ervin had done a recent set-up on it). So, perhaps a neck reset down the line. But the price was extremely reasonable (extremely reasonable!), even for it needing a probable neck reset in the future. But what really turned me on was the tone of this behemoth! This is not a guitar that smothered me with its output like I had experienced with other Mod D's from Ervin. In other words, it was not "too much guitar" for me. It is a great fit for my style. And it seems like it is still in the first stage of opening up, so I'm looking forward to playing the heck out of it for the next few years in that regard. The body style is still a bit too big for me but I'll live with that. Anyway, I'm a happy camper. I can't post pics but here's a link to the LC web site and the guitar.

Congratulations,
I see Pat Donohue play quite often, starting back around '87. That's the era when he recorded and played live with his Somogyi. It was a fantastic sounding guitar, as I'm sure yours is.

Awesome score, congratulations. The way Somogyi does Dreads is so nice.
Perhaps the pleasing tone of this particular Somogyi to your ear is due to the low saddle. The low saddle would decrease string tension slightly and also drive the top less. Maybe it doesn't need a neck reset if you are happy with it. Just a thought. |

Cool guitar...I looked it up when you had posted about "thinking about buying"...
I don't know for sure on this oder guitar, but for many years Ervin has applied lacquer over the assembled guitar, including (doh) the neck/body-joint. I'm not sure if he used a standard dovetail back then (and if so, this will be the easy part of the reset), but you will have a not insignificant finish-issue if you do a neck reset. Personally I would have consulted w/Ervin for his cost estimate on a neck reset (finish-work included) before springing for a guitar with no-saddle showing above the bridge...or maybe ask Frank Ford at Gryphon about this. In fact, I'd be more inclined to go to a top-flight repair/restoration tech to deal with this kind of thing...but someone that is rather familiar w/Ervin's work. Sorry if this bit of realism is a downer...but it's a real issue.
