I took some time to scrape back the bindings and clean things up a bit this morning. Now just need to finish up the arm bevel and this one will be ready for the neck.

Madrona Guitars Workshop Updates
The arm bevel is done, so I’ll be setting this one aside to get the purfling and binding caught up on my Koa Vendovi.
   The Abalone purfling went well today. While this set of Koa is not what you would call psycho curl, it does have some nice figure and color variations. It will really glow under finish.

I’ve been splitting my time on a new spray room that I hope to have ready to spray these guitars soon. I did make some progress however and have the Cocobolo binding installed on the back of my Koa Vendovi.

Last of the binding going on, just have to glue on the arm bevel veneer. I found these metal thumb tacks on Amazon they really hold up better if you need to tap them with a fret mallet for a little extra hold.
    Cocobolo “potato chip” ready to go. Neck carving coming soon… Thanks for following along!

I took some time and got things cleaned up and ready for necks. This low angle block plane is my go to for leveling bindings.
 A fun project with metal dovetails. It was featured in Fine Woodworking magazine back in 2012. While not the final finish I did kind of like the rich color the water based filler brought out.  I also did some figuring on the necks today, the Purpleheart guitar will have this very dark Wenge, I think it’s a good color match. In my research of guitars made of Purpleheart I really didn’t like the color contrast with tan woods like Mahogany, so I’m trying to keep the secondary woods more in the white scale or on the dark side.  For the Koa guitar I glued up some nice Honduran Mahogany. It’s so nice to work with and very stable, when it came off the table saw there was absolutely no binding. Straight as an arrow!

Took a few days off to do some beach combing, but back at it today. Headstocks are prepared and fretboard binding is going on.
    We found some nice agates on the beach. Had the idea to incorporate agate in a guitar design maybe on the next go around.   Any ideas on how to incorporate agate?
