I don't think it's a Greek bouzouki. They usually have longer necks, and I think three string pairs. This is a 6-stringed guitar-like instrument, and I bet it's a guitar made to look like a lute for the purpose of playing at Renaissance-type events. Looks like it might have nylon strings.

Looks like a German-made guitar, shaped like a lute, lots of these gathering dust in Europe. Wiki here:

Those are most commonly known as "guitar-lutes" in English-speaking countries. What it is is a guitar built in the shape of a lute. Those instruments are most common in German-speaking countries, where they were associated with Volksmarch societies.

I've played some that were strung with nylon strings and some intended for steel strings, but wasn't impressed with any of them, frankly.

Thanks everyone, I posted it on behalf of a friend who is trying to identify a storage locker find. This should help her out.

Am I missing something, but doesn't say it's a lute right above the pic?

It's not a true lute. It's a guitar built in the shape of a lute.

Renaissance re-enactors love these things (had some college friends who used to do it) - more authentic vibe than the Giannini Craviolas I see al the time - and it sounds like the original owner of the locker was into that scene based on the other contents. Find out where the local Shakespeare society meets - she could probably make a good buck...
