Same reason tires are metric and wheels are imperial.

I still haven't figured out why we park on driveways and drive on parkways, but I'm working on it...

I could shake it until I'm blue in the face (hey, maybe that's the answer!) but it'll still be orange. Maybe it's a Canadian thing (though maybe they should call it Selsun Orange) and the company doesn't think we'll ask these penetrating questions?

Perfect tie in for this forum. And now I've gotta go learn this one... An easy (presumably) old favorite!

But since the topic is thing that make you go hmm... I'm watching the Army vs Ohio State game today and see a coach (Greg Schiano) on the sidelines with another coach following him around whose only job appears to be keeping Coach Schiano from going onto the field. He was hovering behind him and every few seconds grabbing him by the hips and gently tugging him back, while Coach Schiano appeared oblivious to it.

Which made wonder, how is the coach smart enough to get that high profile job and yet incapable of keeping himself off the field? What is the other coach's title, Coach Wrangler? And wouldn't it have been easier (and less strange looking) to have one of those kiddie leashes on him? Made me go hmm...

Using the word "go" in the context the OP used it, makes me think "Hmmmm". The word "say" might have been more appropriate, as in "Things that make you say hmmmm...".

'Twas sticking with the vernacular ('cause that's just the way it goes...)

Here is a bit of help with that youtube video posted in response to my post...

Well, I must have some perseverance, since I was able to watch almost 2 minutes of it.

You have more perseverance than I, Tony, 'cause I didn't get more than 30 seconds in...I didn't say I liked it...just that that's where the idiom came from!

That use of the word "go" and a couple of oddities came from the movie "Valley Girls" and the (thankfully) short-lived fad surrounding it. The two phrases from that unfortunate era include "so I'm like..." and "so I go...".

What seems really strange to me, having lived in the San Fernando Valley while growing up, is why on earth people would want to emulate those speech characteristics. The idea of "Valley Girl" was similar to the idea of "dumb blonde" in the 1950s. A "Valley Girl" characterized girls who lived in the San Fernando Valley, whose parents were well to do, but the girls were supposed to be stupid, maybe similar to the later "slackers" with their "dude..." phrases.

Personally, just as with the "dumb blonde" characterizations, I do think the whole "Valley Girl" concept was unfair to the girls being made fun of.

Anyway, that is where those two phrases came from originally.

Unfortunately, I hear many people, regardless of education level, use both of these phrases frequently.
