Default So Lonesome I Could Cry (cover)

Here is my rendition of Hank Williams' classic from 1952.

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry

Even though this has been covered by many artists over the years it never seems to lose its luster...a simple and heartfelt song for all time.

Well done.

Hank songs are always well worth revisiting. His recordings of this song were always too upbeat to my mind - but he was aiming at a slightly different audience I guess and left the Steel guitar to add in the musical sadness.

The Lyrics tell a story of someone so cast down that they see everything negatively, and simply don't know what to do.

I note that you used a descending bass line - and Randy Travis used this to great effect, with a similar line up to Hank's.

Marty Stuart and Keith Urban seem to get the soul of the song across well.

I recorded this little video late one night - long way from perfect, but I thought it should be expressed as a blues, and i had my National tuned to open D.

...then I discovered this !

Bluesy, bottleneck, and descending bass line !

Thanks for giving it a listen and taking time to reply. Your post provides good examples of what I mentioned in the opening post...there have been many covers of this great classic!

Gorgeous vocals, Bob. Absolutely stunning. I can hear the emotion and vulnerability in your voice. Nice guitar work, too!

My trio rehearsed a new arrangement of this so0ng this afternpoon. After a while our bass player said 2this song isn't sad , it's depressing ! Do we really intend to sing it to an audience?" He was serious.

I asked him if he liked blues numbers. "Oh yes!"

And what are most blues songs about ?

"oh! er ....never mind."

Tell him that the hallmark of old country music was heartbreak and sad songs!
