Fostex 250 Portastudio
This one plays cassettes recorded at twice normal speed (4 tracks on one side).
I'm looking to get one of these for mixing down some old recordings into my digital system for remastering. IF you have one that works, let me know, perhaps we can work out a deal (rental or otherwise). Kenny

Ah yes, those were the days.
Many many late night hours with my 4 track cassette. And I ate up lotsa rainy weekend afternoons joyously learning to overdub. I opted for the Tascam 244, which I still have and seems to work just fine, although its been 15 years since it was plugged in. If we lived a little closer I'd be happy to see if it would be compatible with what you have. I'll be watching this to see if someone still has an old Fostex. Thanks for the memory jog. Good luck. |

Just wondering if the X-15 is compatible with the 250. Perhaps it would play back the cassettes fine, but of course there's no telling if the tape heads would line up with the recorded tracks.

X-15 and 250
I just did a quick search and found this thread:
https://www.soundonsound.com/forum/v...p?f=15&t=40635 I don't think the X-15 will work because it runs at a slower tape speed than you require. This is what I found: "I believe the 250 ran at 3-3/4 ips. You would need a machine which plays that speed. I think the X-15 and X-30 only ran at 1-7/8ips so would not be suitable. Also as you say you need 4 tracks of Dolby C. Also Dolby C is very intolerant of certain playback misalignments. Everything has to be pretty well "spot on" or it can sound dreadful." |

I use to love to 4 track record. I went through a bunch of 4 tracks until I found the ones that made the most consistent decent recordings, and I would say Tascam had the leg up on Fostex, and at used prices they don't really cost any more. Check out the Tascam 424 MkII and MkIII , I think that's when they were really hitting there stride. As a matter of fact, I found one new in the box about a year ago, and I brought it on my yearly vacation with me to write some new songs with and I had a ball Good luck on your search, and happy 4 tracking!!!
Here's the rig that I brought with me on vacation. I had to use a cheap little external preamp so that I could phantom power the mics, as the Tascams didn't have phantom... |
