Default Help with chord I don't know the name of

Can someone recognize and help me with the name of this chord. It's essentially playing an "A" chord fingering but on the third fret, or:

e 0

B 3

G 3

D 3

A 0

E x

Trying to learn a song and I have all the chords except for this one, thanks.

It's a hard chord to name, but I'd go for Bb(#4)/A. The 3rd fret notes form a Bb triad, and the top E is a #4 (relative to Bb).
There's a very dissonant b9 interval between the A bass, and the Bb on 3rd string.
It looks/sounds like a kind of flamenco chord to me. You could pair it with an A chord, going up to this one and back - instant southern Spain! And then resolve to Dm (if you like).

What song did you find it in?

It's fun! Kinda takes you places, huh?
'cept wouldn't that A be a Major 7th? (7+ or maj7, not b9) so Bb#4maj7 ....
get a cool semi-resolve by dropping to x03230

Yes, the A is a major 7th relative to Bb, so I guess you could say it's a Bbmaj7#11 in 3rd inversion (ie 7th on bottom). That would be very rare (normally) for a maj7 chord, because of that A-Bb dissonance (isolate strings 5 and 3 in that shape to hear how they sound together... ouch ).
The "flamenco" sound I mentioned can be highlighted by mixing this chord with A or A7, and using D harmonic minor (A phrygian dominant) to noodle around over them.

etc etc

(I still want to know the song shekie found it in...)

Thanks for the replies (I think ).

Believe it or not, I'm trying to learn Paul Simon's Father & Daughter for my daughter's impending Bat Mitzvah and as a returning (after 37 years) beginner, I'm trying to dumb down the song so I can play it at the end of May.

The chord I'm missing is actually the instrumental section of the song near the end in between the two final choruses:

Final line before the instrumental: There could never be a father loved his daughter more than I love you

I have the instrumental as: D Bm | Em A4 | Bm | G | Bm | G ? | D | G

First line of chorus after instrumental: I'm gonna watch you shine, gonna watch you grow

I'm trying to figure out what that ? is after the G as I may need to re-do the song in the key of C instead of D.

If it's really a "Bb(#4)/A" or a "Bb#4maj7, screw it, I'm gonna learn "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and be done with it...

And yes, I agree it works great for Flamenco going back and forth between this mystery chord and an "A"!

I have a program installed on my PC called Guitarator Toolbox. Allows you to identify chords.

Where did you get the fingering from? If it sounds ok then does it matter what the name is?
Could it be another A4 that would give a standard ii V I ending.

I just messed around until I found a chord fingering that sounded good to me. As for why the need for the name of the chord, I'm not sure I can sing high enough in the key of D, so I was considering dropping down to C or using a capo on the first fret and using C#.

If I drop down to C or C#, I have to transpose everything, which I've been able to do, except for that one chord.

I tried a website that allows you to select chords and then lets you know what chord you are playing, it came up as either an A#/F or a Dm#5/F.

I'm going to try a G# and see if that will work if I do the song in the key of C.

Cheat like I do and let the vocals cover that section. It's like when they substituted the frog DNA in the strand from Jurassic Park!

Justin's looks like an excellent resource, thank you.

The song is not so familiar that anyone will notice if you simplify that instrumental bridge. Don't be discouraged by the names of chords, I suspect you're trying to play a Bb and are just simplifying the fingering. Don't let those open strings ring and it is a simple chord.

Going by that video the instrumental part starts at 4.20. The chords on capo 4 are, starting with the Am on the word 'you',
Code:
| Am / / / | / / / / |
...you"

|F / Em /| Dm / G / |
Instrumental

| C / / / | / / / / |
"Trust your intuition ...etc
I don't hear that chord at all.
