I often hook my thumb over when playing a D chord even when I'm only intending to play a 4-string D. My control isn't great, and if I do get sloppy and strum all six strings I just pretend I wanted the F# note.

I wrap my thumb to mute the low E for C and A chords as a form of damage control too.

I'm the same way Moto. Started using my thumb to mute and while doing so, accidently discovered the D/F#. I like the full sound that it gives, but as others have said, doesn't sound properly with every song.
