Default New to Fingerstyle..

Having strummed my acoustic guitar using simple chords on and off over the years to low standard I decided to get my guitar out and learn fingerstyle about 2 months ago. So far I've found a couple of utube clips using simple thumb and two fingers patterns, also I'm trying simple pimami type patterns to get my third finger going.
I was looking for advice on where to go from here. I have also ordered a set of elixir custom light strings. I have just joined the forum and this is my first post..

Welcome to the forum. There's some great tips in a discussion going on now a few threads away, on Travis picking.

I highly recommend The Acoustic Guitar Fingerstyle Method book by David Hamburger. That is a great book and CD. Additionally, I've had good luck with online lessons. I've been using JamPlay and have liked it, but there are other good ones out there as well.

Thanks for the replys and links.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Travis fingerstyle thumb and finger. The stuff I've been reading is to try to learn thumb and 3 fingers right at the beginning.I know there is no set pattern and I can play with 1,2 or 3 fingers if I choose but 3 is better.
I'm new to all of this so any info would appreciated...

Check out truefire.com. They have very good lessons for all skill levels and most styles. On this site you can preview downloadable lessons to purchase. They are having a Memorial Day sale right now, too. Also check out Toby Walker's lessons. Toby is a pro musician and an AGF member. He has some beginner finger style lessons available and you can also check him out on YouTube. Happy picking!

IIRC Merle Travis played with a thumb and index finger, but over the years it seems that adding in the other fingers has come to be included under the "Travis Style" heading.

Hi Niko,

I'm a few months into the journey you are starting on.

I'm very happy with the book/CD Intro to Travis Picking (or something like that) by Mark Hanson. It starts at the beginning and it kept me occupied for quite a while. Both exercises and a few real songs with melody as well as bass.

I've recently begun Toby Walker's intro to fingerpicking video/tab series. Also highly recommended.

Good luck!

I've just found a site called Justin Guitar that looks good and there are finger style lessons with video clips in the beginners section which looks good to get me going. I think at some stage I'd like to get a lesson book. There's something good about having a book instead of a tablet that turns of when you don't want it to or the battery goes flat at that important moment..

http://www.guitarnick.com/ has a lot of free arrangements (his YouTube channel below) and some practice lessons. There is also some YouTube teachers who specialize in fingerstyle:

Thanks everyone for all the links. The amount or resource out there is massive. I think I'll carry on with what I'm doing while I look at the links then pick one and stick with it. My playing is purely for pleasure at the moment and I'll see where it takes me...

Niko...

Deep River Blues may well be (one of) the ultimate piece(s) for finger-style folk stuff, demonstrated here by the immortal Doc Watson. His part starts around 1:30...

Second this.

Tommy Emmanuel has stated that the first thing he teaches people to finger pick is Elizabeth Cotten's Freight Train. Another great song.
