"Not sure, but it is fun".
Not sure, but it is "fun". The meaning changes between these two. The first would be interpreted as a quote that somebody else said or wrote. The second (I think...) indicates that it isn't really fun. In thinking about this, the second sentence is more confusing with the quotes. Oh well. Better talking about this than politics, I guess. I do notice that some people use asterisks where one would normally use quotation marks, which I don't get. Maybe it's an internet thing. One internet thing that I'm glad went away was typing in all lower case letters like they were e e cummings. I didn't object to seeing it, I just could not bring myself to do it. But if people want to put quotation marks around every other word, that's fine with me.

Just slows me down when I'm reading because I have to go an extra step to figure it out.

I don't know that I would call them "unnecessary."

I think people inadvertantly use them to imply emphasis, whereas they should use asterisks.

Quote:
Back on topic, I use quotation marks as if I would make the quotes hand gesture when I'm talking. Like I'm saying one word but implying another. I know that's not correct but I think all my AGF "friends" know what I'm trying to say.

I thought the use of the asterisk-enclosed-word was from the days when email formatting was undeveloped in some text editors. Asterisks replaced italics because plain text wouldn't allow for italics. Rich text does. That's where I thought it all came from.

i was wondering the same thing the other day and I came up with this really unique original thought ..... ask not what quotation marks can do for you, ask what you can do for quotation marks.

Yeah, sure. There are some "unnecessary" quotation marks showing up in some posts.
But, when you think about it, isn't most everything posted here on AGF "unnecessary"? Maybe even including this "thread". Isn't that part of the "joy" of coming to AGF? A "respite" from the "necessary"? "Just a thought"* * an allusion to dialogue in the movie "Transamerica". |

Wasn't there a Seinfeld episode based on this? With the cast talking about signs like:
