This guitar has great low end and muscular presence...particularly for a small guitar. Very impressive.

To import a YouTube video, simply paste the bold portion of the URL between the YouTube tags. See below...

Thank you OMO. It is nice to have the video there I instead of just the link. It was the combo of the sound of this guitar and the beauty of a Hatcher previous koa build I had seen that really sold me on getting the Hatcher.

Default On a side note.

I started setting up and bending the sides today. Here is a close up of the two sides. The chatoyance is already impressive and this is straight dry wood. Gotta love Koa!

Here is a picture of the bender. I got both sides bent today. There is so much figure on these that I thin them much more than usual so they bend easily without cracking I then laminate them in a separate mold.

Thanks for viewing!
Mark

That back book-match is THE BOMB, Mark. Really nice work!

(for Tom) If the check bounces....

It is rare that the 3-D quality of chatoyant wood is clearly and unmistakably communicated in a posted pic. It must be absolutely stunning in person. Dang me...

I will fully admit to all that this word was new to me until I joined the AGF, chatoyant....I now know its meaning and have seen it in a number of examples of wood on this forum. It is also used to describe gemstones which most of you probably know.

As OddManOut just pointed out and also mentioned in this brief definition from the dreaded wikipedia, it is rare to see this so clearly in a photo, but even more so in dry wood.....

"In woodworking:

Chatoyancy can also be used to refer to a similar effect in woodworking, where certain finishes will cause the wood grain to achieve a striking three-dimensional appearance; this can also be called pop-the-grain, wood iridescence, moire, vibrancy, shimmer or glow.[4] This effect is often highly sought after, and is sometimes referred to as "wet look", since wetting wood with water often displays the chatoyancy, albeit only until the wood dries. Oil finishes, epoxy, and shellac can strongly bring out the "wet look" effect"

To say I am pleased with these sides would be the understatement of the year....Now I can't wait to see their chatoyance actually under finish...Oh my...

Lizzard, you will be the first to know, I promise, if my check bounces...

Going to be a beauty, gents. I'm a huge fan of Koa, and that is some pretty wood.

Thanks for the comments folks!

Today I finished constructing a laminating mold for a Piña. I've laid up the first side and plan on closing up the body next week:

Cheers!

Default wowee

I can picture the tone of this Pina in my ears right now.
Having the honor of owning the first Pina, I know what depth comes humming out of this little axe...

...and coupled with the fact that I also own a 40 year old Kawika built baritone ukulele with a red cedar top and flaming sapwood koa back n sides that exudes immense depth of sound, sustain, and great response unlike most solid koa ukes

This Hawaiian boy Hatcher Pina is going set a standard as did Kawika did with his innovative, before his time, deep body baritone "married" with red cedar and koa.

Ahh I remember something about a very long round trip for some Koa, did you get that beautiful Koa guitar that is a sister set to this one?

You need to update your guitar signature, there is no Hatcher listed

Palolowarrior has the Black Ebony Parlor on the YouTube posted on this thread. There is a lot of Koa this one for the neck and trim and it did come from the same billet as your back and side set.
