Default Mixer with direct outs?

I know this has probably been discussed 1000 times, but I can't seem to find an answer.

I'm running a MOTU firewire interface to record to Logic Pro X in my computer.

It's great! I've been using this set-up for about 8 years now. I have a mixer in front of the MOTU unit, and feed all my sources into it, mic's, guitars, etc. Then i patch into the back of MOTU (channels 3&4) and feed that signal via FW into the computer.

The thing is, I can only end 2 channels out the mixer. I would love to do some live multi-tracking, by placing an 8 channel (or 6 channel would be fine), in front of the MOTU, send all discreet, direct channels, post fader and post eq, into each individual channel of the MOTU in's on the back.

Does anyone know of an along mixer with a small footprint that will do this?

You might want to look at a used Mackie 820i or 1220i mixer, depending on how many preamps you need. They can send individual channels, via firewire, either pre or post E/Q. Using one of these you wouldn't need to use your Motu interface; the mixer would connect right to your computer's firewire connection. They are small footprint devices.

They are not a current design, but there seem to be some new devices still available as well as lots of them used on craigslist, etc. Used 820i are in the $100-$150 range and used 1220i are in the $250-$350 range.

Thanks ChuckS! It looks like if it has an "i" at the end of it, it doesn't have what I'm looking for. The older 1220 (no "i") def. has what I need. Thanks for the input!

If you're considering Mackie, make sure anything you buy from them has supported/working drivers for your operating system. If you wanted to use the interface that is, the rest of the mixer would work fine of course.

If you are wanting analog mixer to provide the mic-preamps etc then the Allen and Heath Mix Wizard series has direct out on each channel. We have a 16:2 and used to use the direct outs for recording.
