It has been a while and this build is almost there for the finish process.

The Pore filling stage of the batch~ The OM is mine!

I believe the neck carving process is done so the pure nitro would be coated soon!

Hope I can do a NGD post by this spring!

Cheers

Alan

Default Aloha Alan HW - RE: Celluloid Pickguards Glued to Raw Spruce Tops!?!

Aloha Alan HW,

Thank you for sharing these Martin replica's with us. And the pictorial process of building a lovely OM from great woods.

However, the real Golden Age of Guitars actually has been in the last 35 years, when innovative, independent luthiers took the older factory designs & techniques, and actually IMPROVED upon what did not work over time previously & who complemented the genius of the pre-War guitars & their factory makers.

"Celluloid pickguards just rolled on. Those are glued on the bare top wood using lacquer thinner only, again the old method."

The wrong method!

One of the things we left behind is gluing plastic pickguards directly to the soft, raw wood of a spruce top, even using lacquer thinner, & then spraying over it. Over time, the wood & plastic shrink at different rates & cracks will eventually radiate out with the grain from the pickguard into the soft spruce topwood.

https://www.google.com/search?q=Pict...hOQzw2tNZTD5M:

As many of us can attest, we've all repaired hundreds of what was the result of poor, but convenience & production-based choices made by Nazareth factory craftsmen - resulting in cracked tops. Now, we finish the top & use non-penetrating, double-stick adhesives like 3M to affix wood, plastic or celluloid pickguards to a finished top.

It's still a bad idea today - no matter who does that or what glue/adhesive is used or if it's a "replica." Perhaps that's what we should be replicating - improvements that don't destroy guitar tops.

Or, perhaps we could also talk about improvements to the old Martin bridge design - like the inherent weaknesses of bridge pin holes drilled along the same shared grain line & its proness to cracking between the holes with the wedging action of the bridge pins (see below pictures). But that's for another time - like the 1930's. Why replicate what doesn't work?
