Harmonizing on Garageband?
Without using an extrenal unit, or record separate vocal tracks with harmony, does garageband having anything built in to do this?
Thanks!

I think you're going to have to multi track it and lay the vocals down yourself mate.
I don't know much about GB, but I have had a go at it and I couldn't find any built in AU /VSTs etc that were able to help out. Secondly, I got the trial version of Antares vocal toolkit and that's very poor too... The only thing I can suggest is to do it yourself, as that way you will get the results you're looking for and you won't have some horrible out of tune robot versions of you squawking over the top. See here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doWhhzxxF48 for my harmonies I just had 2 extra tracks...easy and free. Tom

Here's a thread from Jan 2011 that I did trying out a hypothesis on vocal harmonization:
Garageband vocal harmony using the Vocal Transformer effect Hope this helps!

Just did another test ...
Another test ... this time trying both the lower fourth and the upper third. Definitely has some funkyness and roboticness (as did the other test). I tried adding some effects on this one to see how it would sound. If you have the opportunity to harmonize with yourself or get someone to drop a harmony track, that would be much more ideal. This way, though, can at least have an interesting effect. One note: on this test I dropped more compression on the vocalizing tracks. A trick I learned a while back is when you do background vocals to compress them fairly good to emulate the mics being further away. I used this method on this track and it worked well (the harmony stars around 1:20).

I experimented once with using GarageBand's built-in effects to add harmony and I didn't like what I came up with. It was robotic and unconvincing. It takes longer, but recording separate harmony tracks works best for me.
