Oktava MK012 & Rode NT1a Spaced pair - your thoughts?
I've been testing various mic positions on my Seagull S6. This is an Oktava MK012 with cardioid capsule 2ft back from 12th fret and Rode NT1a 2ft back from bridge. I haven't added EQ compression or reverbs, I just raised the gain on one channel to match the other. How does it sound on this little clip?
http://snd.sc/XVfZyU I find it very hard/impossible to be objective about my own recordings and I want to get some music down at some point Rob |

Hey Rob - can you perhaps make it a little longer and enable downloading? I just learned something about myself: my ears can't really adjust/hear too much in 7-8 seconds. Maybe I need 20 seconds or so. Thanks!

Scott,
yes sorry I never thought about that. I have a total of about 40 seconds of me just noodling about soundchecking. I didn't intend to run it past anybody here, heres the other bit http://snd.sc/XVizVw |

Cool - thanks. Maybe others with more experience will be able to hear more - even with the longer clip, it's choppy 5-10 second "snippets" which was hard for my brain to come to grips with for some reason. I know you weren't intending to share this - I'm not trying to judge or anything haha. I'm just learning that, for whatever reason, my brain is struggling with this.
Overall, I thought it was a nice sound. My first thought was that there were some early reflections hitting the mic that were affecting the sound. I tried to do a mix - I don't think I did very well though as, upon comparison with the original, it's really subtle. And I added quite a bit of "stuff" but still it's a very subtle change. So that was interesting. Anyway, you can check it out if you want: http://scottwhigham.com/audio/mix.wav I just did a bit here and there - added a bit of top, cut a bit of mud - but I'm not really happy with that result. |

Cheers Scott,
I suppose I'm really just trying to get an angle from the forum on whether it's an acceptable sound to record with because I tried some other mic set ups and this was, with my limited experience thus far' one of the better sounding ones. I was initially coming in closer with the mics but there is less proximity/boom on this one as the S6 does throw some low end out. I like the forum ethos of using as little EQ as possible and focusing on mic placements |
