Default Old Yamaha FGs

Anyone out there using a pre-'82 Yamaha FG as their "live" stage guitar? Also, which singer-songwriters used one of these - or uses one now - to record? I found out Steve Tilston used an FG-180 for his first studio album, on some/all songs.

James Taylor played a 180 in the early years. Elliot smith’s main guitar was a 180 for most of his career (RIP). Butch Walker (super producer and stud solo artist in his own right) has said that he’s used them for decades as a secret weapon in the studio because they record really well.

John Denver owned a few Yamaha's, played on stage and used in some of his recordings.

Appreciate the responses. I ask because my 331 offers so much... When I play my Alvarez, which is more dread-like, and booms... The 331 booms, as well, w/less effort, when strummed, and rings when played w/the fingers. I think this would make a wonderful stage guitar for a singer-songwriter, and recording (I've read it is, for the latter), regardless of it being all laminate.

A set-up w/bone nut and saddle is on the agenda, once the tax man pays me (the tax man up here takes quite a bit, by the way ) I'm trying to secure a FG-75, because of the different sound via ladder bracing - the 75 would also be a decent stage guitar, properly set up, to my ear.

Thanks for the responses. And especially the videos!

I had a bone nut and saddle installed on the FG-331I once owned and the results were stunning.

I've heard and read the same. Can't wait. Mine has zero neck angle issues. The 75 I'm looking at doesn't, either. Bone on the 75, ladder-braced... That'll be nice, as well!

Thats rare. My 180 and 230 are wall art due to bad necks.

I know. I was blown away when I got the 331. It was in very good shape - years of mileage left. Sometimes you get lucky.

I have an old Yamaha Fg-110-1 black label that I bought in an antiques store for $70. I believe it is a '76...Very nice playing and sounding guitar. I play it a lot here at home. I wouldn't hesitate to play gigs with it.

I use an FG-335 as my stage acoustic. It is OM sized and I love it. I had been bringing my D-18GE to a local open mic, but felt like I couldn't leave it to go to the bathroom. I had an FG before and regretted selling it....So I got another and installed a K&K pure mini. Great stage guitar! Enjoy your 331......
