Default What's your favorite masking tape?

What's your favorite masking tape for masking off when spraying finish?

What gives the finest line and prevents the solvents in the finish from dissolving the sticky stuff under the tape?

3M 2060 or Scotch 401. May be the same, but very close if not. Same tear strength and same adhesive. 2060 is called Tape for hard to stick surfaces. Comes off with no residue in normal use. Does leave some adhesive when used to bend bundled bindings and purflings using a blanket or bending iron.

A trick my father taught me:

If you're worried about bleed through under masking tape, apply some clear on the tape line and that seals the edge. If you're dealing with colors then apply some of the same color of the covered edge then proceed.

I use the green 3m auto parts store tape for holding bindings while gluing. I haven't used it for masking off stuff yet... It sticks quite hard to guitar wood and you have to be pretty careful about not tearing up the wood.

For normal masking - I use the blue 3M painters tape. That stuff doesn't maintain a death grip on the wood.... It works fine but comes back off easy too.

I don't like the old white cheap masking tape. That stuff tears up too easily and it leaves a ton of glue residue behind. It also dries out fairly quickly and leaves piles of dried up glue behind on your work.

Thanks

Contrary to what some others may have found, I never have issues with white tape.

My old man (and Im 50) was a spray painter by trade, everything was masked up with white tape, I learnt from him and have continued that into instrument repairs.

Knowing how to use tape helps, learning to de-tack the surface, painting using rolled edges, painting a soft edge and so forth, these all come into play when painting.

At my local store White tape is approx 80c a roll, the fancy tapes / blue / purple / green range upwards of $9.99 a roll.

American PG21. We switched all our 3M tapes to American over 20 years ago in my auto collision shop and I continue to enjoy the incredible performance of this tape in my guitar finishing these days. There is no equal to the PG21 for me.
