Default rosette

Now, I really like that one, not ultramodern, it sits in both camps quite nicely.

There are many threads from colleagues that centralize around a theme about how great their clients are. I too have been blessed with many such clients. At the moment, I am working with a couple of guys who think a little outside the norm. Case in point the JS (baritone) shown earlier in the thread. One of my other guys is really willing to “try” things out. We have done many different wood combinations and it seems like he is always will to push me into areas I might not have considered.

Here are a couple shots of something he dreamt up. He wanted one of my (GP) Grand Parlor models, and was thinking about a cutaway. He then thought, “hey what if you put a 12th fret body connection on the bass side upper bout and the 15th fret body connection on the treble side?” Essentially it would be sort of like a cutaway. I got out my sketch pad and we went back and forth a bit.

First, we got the what it would look like from the front sort of nailed down

The back seemed like it would be easy until it came to the heel of the neck, hmmmm

Then this try, I didn't really like it, but I was just throwing stuff at the wall to see what would stick:

There was a bunch more ideas, but then I came up with this one which we ultimately moved forward with.

It certainly presented some challenges. This guitar was also started before I had to take some time from the shop. It got most of the focus when I would come home for a day or two. Again, great and understanding customers help so much. This one is ready for finish, I will get some shots of the actual guitar together in a bit.

Thanks, although the thread may get dormant from time to time as I am still dealing with stuff that is taking me out of the shop. Actually will be leaving for a couple of days later today. Still I hope you continue to find these things interesting.

Aww David, thanks. That really means a lot considering the source.

So getting back to the GP, I only could dig up a couple of shots from the build. Hopefully I can take a few more when I get the finish stuck on it.

It is cedar top, with a Stauffer inspired rosette of maple and rosewood. The bridge and fretboard are Katalox. I especially like the drywall screws holding the bridge on there. (The screws were just to hang the bridge for the photo.)

The back and sides are Koa, the binding is spalted katolox

Just a little closer look of the heel transition

Hi Robert,

It is good to hear from you. I was going to bring this one over to the customer at Bearsville as he frequents the Woodstock show. Speaking of which, sorry I missed you last year. I may have introduced you to the guy who owns this one at the previous shows ... if not perhaps at future Woodstock show. Anyway he loves this one and has another similar theme in the works. (I think this will be his 10th osthoff.) He wants to base the next one on a FS model with a 12 fret/16 fret connection. Nothing definite yet, but we have set aside time in the build schedule for a possible start later next month (we'll see.)

In the meantime here are some shot's of the completed guitar in another thread from last year

Oh by the way Robert, there is yet another headstock on this one. We are calling it the NQSSP, (not quite straight string pull.)

I mention this because Robert and I have had an on-going conversation about "my" headstocks.
