Welcome the cool kids club. HD-28’s are awesome. Mine will leave your ears ringing if I crank it up all the way.

Congratulations on the HD-28. My educated guess is that your guitar will get louder as it acclimates. I’ve had it happen too many times to count as virtually every guitar I have owned has been a long-distance purchase. The more you play it the faster it will “wake up.”

Welcome and congratulations.
You must have got one of the quieter ones. The wood used for the top can make a big difference to the volume of the sound even amongst the same species. With a custom build, the luthier can tap and listen (tap-tone) the sound of the wood before building the guitar. |

Ya that is one beautiful top on that hd. Play the heck out of it. I bet as you get accustomed to it it will get louder. I bet you are playing it kinda gingerly as it is new and all. Oh and WELCOME!

Very Purdy Guitar!
I have a 2013 HD28. Mine doesn't sound quite so loud to me when playing as it does to the listener in front of the guitar. Have you tried letting someone else play the two guitars while you listen? Happy Playing! |

Nice looking HD28. It will be plenty loud I've had mine since 2004 and it's a cannon. I play bluegrass both at home and with 2 other retired friends. I've done some upgrades a fossilized walrus ivory saddle and bridge pins. This added more volume and overall enhanced the sound of my HD28. Mine is really played in and that makes a big difference. I play both lead and rhythm plus Carter style picking and have no trouble with volume. Also find the string that optimizes your HD28 for me it ended up being Martin 550 phosphor bronze strings in medium gauge.

hogwild, Welcome to the AGF! What a great way to introduce yourself. I wonder if the guitar needs to acclimate more to it's new environment? |

That is gorgeous wood grain. I'm in the same boat but mine is on layaway. I played it again couple days ago and warmed up to it more. You'll get used to it

Did I say I LOVE the color of that top? Lord that's gorgeous for almost 4-year-old guitar. Yeah, gorgeous instrument. Enjoy!

Welcome to the board and congrats on the HD28. The silking on that top is really impressive.
I agree with some others that it may be a little too damp and will likely improve as it acclimates. Jimmero mentioned it may be louder than you think. I can vouch for this happening. I have an HD28V and a custom OM28, same woods, scale length, everything. While playing them with the same attack on the same song the OM always sounds louder to me. Yet I've noticed people talking in the room will raise their voices when I'm playing the HD, but not the OM. I also notice I need to sing a bit stronger with the HD. Perception vs reality? One last thought, how do the action heights compare between your 2 guitars. As a grasser, could the new guitar benefit from a bit higher action? That could raise the volume too. Welcome again and enjoy your beautiful guitar.
