Slotting tuner buttons
I'd like to make my own tuner buttons, but I'm not sure how to cut the slots. Do I need a 1/8" chisel? Is it done with a rotary tool?
The only other method I can think is to make it in halves, but I'm concerned that it will take away from the look. |

when making a D-shaped hole or a double-D shaped hole there are several ways to approach it.
A specialized tool (like a chassis punch) can do this but that doesn't really work in deep wood. Another way is to use a very narrow mill and mill the profile of the D. The easiest hand tool method will be to drill a small pilot hole (so wood has a place to move to. Then use a chisel to make a square slot (not centered but so the top edge is where the top of the D's flat will be). Then use a chisel to open the radius part a little then a small file to round that out.

I didn't realize there were different kinds of buttons. The specific ones I'm looking to replace are rectangular.
The pilot hole idea is a good one, I'll definitely use that |

drill a pilot hole, then use a square needle file to finish it to a press fit.

I think this is the best idea. Thanks!
