Default Gibson QC on Truss Rod Nuts

I recently had two higher quality (2k+ and a 4k+) Gibsons come across my workbench. Both of these were out of the box new. I was doing a setup on both and I came across this weirdness where it looks like part of the nut itself was sheared off on a side or just broken.

This is a typical Gibson truss rod for comparison. This was on a more standard model.

And this is the weirdness I spoke of. This model was particularly expensive.

And another example of this weirdness on a less expensive but still pricey model.

It's an easy fix to replace them, but on a factory stock guitar just seems a bit weird. Any thoughts?

I've always assumed that they buzzed off the top of the nut for clearance under the truss rod cover, even sometimes when such clearance wasn't needed.

That would make sense.
