Default Open Tuning Blues - Where to Start?

Over time I have reached the point where blues is almost all I play on the guitar anymore.

So far, I have been a staunch practitioner of standard tuning and standard tuning only. But lately I have been feeling like I really should start to learn to play some of the cool open tuning songs that I have been avoiding.

I should probably also cave in and finally learn to use a slide.

Which tuning should I start out with for Open Tuning Blues stuff on acoustic guitar? I have been under the impression that Open G was the most commonly used in the acoustic blues world but I could easily be mistaken about that.

Any tips or advice or links to good resources would be greatly appreciated!

Open D tuning, DADF#AD is also another good one. 'Dinner Blues' by Bo Carter is one great example in that tuning. 'Police Dog Blues' by Blind Blake is in that one as well.

Drop G tuning: DGDGBE. Lots of fun. 'My Baby' and 'Arrangement For Me', also by Bo Carter are great tunes.

Another one is D minor tuning: DADFAD. Skip James and Bukka White did an awful lot with that one. Robert Johnson's 'Hellhound on my Trail' is also done in that one, although he copied much of it from Skip.

Start with open D or G. Both of those are excellent tunings for the blues.

I think this is a good place to start, the tune is simple.

A nice easy one in open D (without slide) is Mississippi John Hurt's Payday:

Here's a cover so you can see the fingering:

Thanks all, I will definitely take a look at those videos. For whatever reason, I have always found it much easier to learn guitar visually than any other way.

I started using open tunings when picking up slide, and I started using open D - I just made more sense to me, imagining it was just a regular bar chord, although that's because I started in open tunings for slide. I still prefer open D for playing on my own but I do use open G a lot too, especially when jamming. The middle DGB strings give me a good reference point when I get a bit lost as they are the same as in standard tuning.
