Default Pain and Suffering...

Picked up my new guitar from UPS. Big, orange warning sticker that my guitar will self destruct if I remove it from the box (slight exaggeration). Really has to stay in a box for 48 hours? Does this box have special Jedi powers to protect my guitar from my air conditioned home?

This is like waking up Christmas morning and seeing all the presents under the tree, but Santa tells you to wait 48 hours before opening.

nah.

Don't bother being careful.

Ignore the manufacturer's warnings

48 is certainly overkill. Just open it up tomorrow morning and you will be fine. In a few hours you can even take it out of the box to hurry it along.

Yeah, you'll be fine waiting only 12 hours.

It's all about preventing quick temperature changes. So let's think through this logically. Assuming the case is of good quality, shouldn't that be sufficient to help draw out the time needed for the case + guitar to acclimate to room temperature. I certainly think so.

So my suggestion is to pull the case out and place it somewhere where it can slowly acclimatize. I would think 12 hours would be more than enough time for the case and guitar to warm up. However, don't try to artificially warm up the case by putting it near a warming element. As the post above stated, once the case is at room temperature for a couple hours, then you should be fine to open up the guitar.

What he said. It's mostly about temperature regulation between the two environments. I've had cold guitars come in the house as well as guitars that rode around on a truck all day in 100+ degree heat.

They must know, from experience, that if you don't wait 48 hours there is a possibility that the guitar could crack and they don't want to be responsible for that.

Guitar came from Missouri to Florida. Guitar arrived at 5:00 am this morning to UPS. I understand leaving the guitar in the case until its at room temperature. But leaving the case in the box for 48 hours...that seems silly. I did not know cardboard was that magical, they should line guitar cases with it (sarcasm).

I am more complaining than inquiring, I dont want to wait 2 days to see it, touch it and play it.

Thanks for the responses.

Pick up a cheap thermal temperature gun then you can monitor the temperature of the shipping box then the case. That's what I did and once the case was the same temp as the room I went ahead and opened mine.

Temps in Missouri are running in the 50s-60s while temps in Florida are running in the 60s and 70s. Unless they routed it through Antarctica you shouldn't have to wait very long.

That's flawed advice.

You cannot measure the temperature of the guitar (or even the case) without opening the box and breaking some of the insulation.

Either open the box or don't but don;'t base that decision on this method.
