A metronome. I bought it a decade ago, used it for one practice session, and never used it again. It is still prominently sitting on one of my shelves.

Maybe one of these days I'll buy a better one. Maybe not.

I'll buy 3 sets of strings I've never used to try them out, put on one set, gag at how I dislike them, and now I've got two sets I will not use. Also, I hate to say it, but I must have over 100 picks that I don't use. I know, I'm sick!

A wind-up guitar tuner. I thought it was a cool idea, no batteries and all, but it doesn't stay alive very long and it's not very accurate, not nearly as accurate as my ear. I used it like twice, then went back to what I'd always done and still do - tune by ear, occasionally referencing to one of many online tone sequences on youtube.

Thalia capo (pretty, but very hard to use)

I cannot imagine practicing without my Boss RC3 looper!

Lots of picks and a Behringer ADI21 preamp which was so cheap that I couldn't resist to get one. Now it's not even worth to be sold.

A Fretlight guitar, one of the early ones that doesn't need a computer hookup.
If anyone is looking for one, drop me an email!

I didn't realize anyone else had this fear. This is why I sell so much gear soon after purchasing.

Plastic thumb picks/finger picks. They shouldn't hurt my fingertips, but they do.

I bought one of those drink holder things that attaches to a mic stand, and I don't even play out.

Took it with me when I did a hymn at church, but didn't seem like I'd need a drink while I was up there for one song.

Oh oh. I just bought one. I had a K&K Pure Mini bridgeplate pickup installed in my HD-28V for use at open mics, but I really don't like the sound. The AD121 improves it to the point of being tolerable.

I'm good with plastic thumb picks, but I've never been able to use plastic finger picks. For me, the best plastic thumb picks were the Dobro brand clear picks. The Dunlop clears are OK.

Beat me to it. A metronome. I've never used the one I received as a gift. I feel there are such better and more musical ways to learn rhythm- ways in which one really can feel the groove. One of my favorite players is Adam Rafferty. Why do I enjoy Adam's music so much? Because that guy knows how to groove, and I think he just might be one of the best I've ever heard when it comes to groove. He just put out a newsletter that I subscribe to that actually told you that if you have a metronome to throw it away! He also provides a warning that it is his most controversial blog post to date
